Astigmatism, explained
Astigmatism is not a disease and not rare — most eyes have a little. It simply means the eye is not perfectly round, so it focuses light along one direction differently from another.
The rugby-ball analogy, and where it breaks down
A perfectly shaped cornea is a slice of a sphere — like the surface of a football, equally curved in every direction. An astigmatic cornea is closer to a rugby ball: steeper across one meridian than the one at right angles to it. Light therefore focuses at two different distances instead of converging on a single point, and neither distance nor near is fully sharp.
The analogy oversells the effect, though. Typical astigmatism is a fraction of a millimetre of shape difference — invisible to anyone looking at you, and often unnoticed by the person who has it.
How it is written and corrected
It takes two numbers: the cylinder (how much) and the axis (which direction). A spectacle lens is ground with matching curvature so the two meridians land together again.
Regular and irregular
The two steepest and flattest meridians are perpendicular. This is the ordinary kind, correctable with glasses or toric contact lenses.
The surface is distorted unevenly — after injury, scarring, or in conditions such as keratoconus. Spectacles can only partly compensate; rigid or scleral contact lenses, which create a new smooth front surface, do better.
Can you wear contact lenses with it?
Yes. Toric soft lenses are routine — they are weighted so they settle at a consistent rotation. Because a contact lens sits on the eye rather than 12 mm in front of it, the numbers differ from your glasses, which is why both prescriptions are worth keeping.
